Number one, realize that when it comes to learning humor, there isn't one school of thought, one course, or one resource certain to make you humorous. There aren't any magic formulas. And at times that is acceptable. It is like singing. I can take all of the classes that I choose and I'll by no means sing like Barbara Streisand regardless how many showers I take. But with some instruction I will sound better - maybe even sufficiently good to sing back up or to sing in the choir. And, who knows, could be there is a star inside of me after all. It's the very same with humor. I was funny by nature. Then I started studying how to create what I did effortlessly. And I trained myself to become truly funnier. I'm continually studying. But here's what I can recommend so far.

How to Describe Humor?

It's such a complicated question and I don't have all the answers, but I will provide you with one of the answers that seems to apply to much of comedy. It's being able to get your listeners believe you will say or do one thing, and next saying or doing something else. Setting them up to assume one thing and after that destroying that assumption. The ways to do this are as different as the many assumptions we come up with as humans - assumptions which vary dependent on location, culture, age, life circumstances, etc. By way of example, let's imagine a man just stated his wife ran off with his closest friend. There are actually different elements all of us expect: that he misses his wife, that he's furious at this particular wife, that he's mad at his best buddy, etc. I heard a comic once state, "My spouse ran off with my best friend. Gosh, will I miss him." That is funny.

Sane people presume mailboxes never talk, therefore once the mailbox spoke back on Candid Camera, everyone laughed. Most people assume that when a guy is walking in a straight path with not anything obvious blocking him, that he is going to continue to walk that straight line. Do not Look For Funny, Look For True

Jokes are told and presented in lots of ways - almost as distinctive as the individual constructing the joke. But if you peel everything away, you'll discover that every joke consists of two elements: the setup and then the punch. You are likely to hear it called different things by different people. However it still means exactly the same thing.

The setup is considered the serious component of the joke. This is when you set your listeners up. This is when you force them to make an assumption. Plenty comedians will mistakenly strain to make their setup humorous. Don't. Ensure that it is true.

As an example:

I dropped fifty pounds.
There is nothing funny concerning this declaration.

Here is the punch:

Oh, not at one time. I lost ten, gained twenty,lost five, gained two.

And that is it. I realize, looks much too simple to be true. Believe me, it's anything but simple. It requires hard work and plenty of writing. It takes writing twenty poor jokes to get one good one. But when you continue to work through the process, you will get much better at it. So let me leave so you can get to work.
